Tip of the Week
Microsoft makes some really smart software, but sometimes it can be too smart for its own good. One example of this would be the MSN Messenger. Not everyone uses MSN Messenger, but Microsoft has it load by default when you start your computer. This slows down your start-up time and needlessly uses up memory on your PC. The controls for disabling MSN Messenger are hidden, but fortunately it is rather easy to take care of once you know where to look.

Microsoft makes some really smart software, but sometimes it can be too smart for its own good. One example of this would be the MSN Messenger. The controls for disabling MSN Messenger are hidden, but fortunately it is rather easy to take care of once you know where to look.

To prevent MSN Messenger from loading automatically, we need to locate the Group Policy control panel. The easiest way to find it is to launch it from the "run" line. Click the "Start" button and then click "Run". On the run line, type:

gpedit.msc
and click "OK".

When the Group Policy window appears, drill down through

Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Windows Components

to "Windows Messenger" where you should see two settings. Double-click on each setting and set the state to Enabled.

Reboot your PC and MSN Messenger should no longer be running. If you ever find that you need MSN Messenger again, you can always run through these steps again and activate MSN Messenger again.
